Mandelic acid- the exfoliating acid for pigmentation.

Today’s exfoliating acid post features Mandelic acid, which research published in Dermatologic Surgery showed was as effective as Glycolic Acid at treating pigmentation but with less redness and irritation. Further studies show that it reduces melasma by as much as 50% in 4 weeks!

Mandelic acids molecules are twice the size of Glycolic acid and a third bigger than Lactic acid so irritation is reduced as it takes a long time to penetrate the skin.

Like other AHA’s it’s micro exfoliating properties help lift excess pigment from skins surface but it’s the only AHA to work on the skins deeper layers to inhibit melanin production too. So what it might lack in speed it makes up for in depth!

It’s gentle approach also makes it’s a winner for those with darker skin tones who should avoid glycolic and lactic acids as the irritation can lead to post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

This is because there’s more melanin in the skin which means there’s also more melanocytes to react to irritation and trigger excess pigmentation according to Dija Ayodele, facial aesthetician and founder of The Black Skin Directory.

Mandelic acid is also being championed by cystic acne sufferers as it has anti bacterial properties, which helps regulate sebum production. This stops acne forming and is gentle enough for everyday use if 5-10% is used 2-3 times a week.

If you’re new to acids start with a gentle wash and only use one acid based product in your routine.

So if you suffer from pigmentation or cystic acne this acid is worth introducing to your skincare regime.

@theordinary and @theinkeylist have Mandelic acid in their skincare ranges and are available from @arnottsdublin and @officialbrownthomas

Do you suffer from pigmentation? It’s an issue that I get a lot of DM’s about!
