Skincare Ingredients - Which ones do you really need?

There is currently an over saturation of skincare ingredients on the market and it’s hard not to be confused about which ones we really need!

I’ve simplified them to make it easier to navigate your way through the minefield that is skincare ingredients.

1) SPF .This is so important as it protects you from ageing in the first place! Your daytime moisturiser should contain an SPF of at least 15 to protect you from the UV rays which are responsible for up to 90% of ageing & are present all year round!

2) Blue light protection. Screen exposure also ages skin so ensure your daytime moisturiser or spf has added blue light protection.

3) Antioxidants. A,C, and E are the holy grails and they mop up the free radicals that cause ageing.

4) Exfoliating acids. Glycolic, lactic, salicylic, azeliac & pha, depending on your skins needs & type. They are chemical exfoliators & they remove dead skin build up and unclog pores revealing a brighter, fresher and more youthful looking complexion.

5) Peptides. These powerful ingredients stimulate collagen which leads to plumper, smoother skin. They may be listed as pentapeptides or hexapeptides. Mayrixyl & argireline are also peptides.

6) Retinol. Products containing this ingredient, which is a derivative of vitamin A are excellent for fading pigmentation marks, smoothing lines & tightening pores. It can be irritating however, but thankfully there’s a new natural alternative on the market called bakuchiol which won’t irritate.

7) Hyaluronic & Polyglutamic Acid. These are excellent for preventing dehydration and plumping up both surface & deeper lines & wrinkles.

8) Ceramides. These skin fats decline as we age and are essential for strengthening & repairing the skins barrier and for keeping skin looking plump & youthful too.

9) Probiotics. Just like a probiotic supplement helps build immunity from the inside, applying probiotics topically helps strengthen the skins immune system against aggressors too.
