The benefits of using resusable cups!

I was absolutely thrilled to see the overwhelmingly positive response to my question “do you use a reusable cup?” on my Instagram stories, as the vast majority of you said yes which is fantastic!

A few of you said you used to, but your local cafe is not accepting them since covid, due to the myth that they’re unsafe.

130 experts including virologists, epidemiologists, biologists, chemists & doctors from 19 countries including our very own covid expert Professor Luke O Neill, have signed a statement coordinated by @greenpeaceuk saying reusable cups are as SAFE as single use plastics, provided the user employs basic hygiene, so hopefully your local cafe will accept them again soon!

Switching to a resusable coffee cup such as @keepcup @stojo @nespresso.uk or @frankandhonestcoffee is one of the easiest changes to make to help save our planet. Not only that, it’s a change that makes a huge difference too, as 500 BILLION are discarded worldwide every year & we bin an estimated 22,000 single use coffee cups every HOUR in Ireland alone & according to government body @mywasteireland most aren’t recyclable!

Most compostable coffee cups don’t even end up in the correct bin anyway, instead they end up in general bins & go on to landfill! Even if they are put into recycling bins they end up contaminating other dry goods! It also still requires substantial energy & water to create single use cups. We should be prioritising reducing & reusing over recycling!

Bringing your own cup is a small & simple step, but it’ll help reduce your carbon footprint in a big way as if you purchase 1 cup a day, you’ll save up to 120kg of CO2 a year simply by switching to a reusable cup, not to mention saving financially as most cafes offer a discount if you bring your own!
